U.S. President Donald Trump celebrated Friday the end of the television program of one of his sharpest critics, comedian Stephen Colbert, whom he described as a “complete idiot” amid the controversy over the cancellation of the popular ‘The Late Show’ by the CBS network.
“It’s finally over for Colbert on CBS – unbelievable that he lasted this long! No talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead man on screen. You could take anyone off the street and he’d be better than this complete idiot. thank goodness he’s finally gone!” wrote Trump on his Truth Social network in the wee hours of the morning.
The message from the president, who on more than one occasion has complained about other late night comedians like Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon, came shortly after the end of the broadcast, which lasted until 1 a.m. on Friday with singer Paul McCartney as the final guest.

In a second message on Truth posted hours later, Trump asserted that the “firing of Stephen Colbert from CBS was the ‘beginning of the end’ for talentless, obnoxious, overpaid, unfunny, and very low-rated late-night talk show hosts.”
“Others, with even less talent, will soon follow. May they all rest in peace!” he insisted.
In this last week of the show, Colbert was joined by dozens of celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen, another big critic of Trump, who described him as “the first guy in America to lose his show because we have a president who can’t take a joke.”
Stephen Colbert’s ‘The Late Show’ had its final airing
Saying goodbye after 11 years, the comedian suggested that he will now enjoy his free time after a successful career in television that included ‘The Colbert Report’ (2005-2014). The also 62-year-old screenwriter has already announced that he will dedicate himself to writing a movie of the Lord of the Rings universe, of which he is a famous fan and connoisseur.
‘The Late Show’ was canceled by CBS in July 2025 in a “purely financial” decision that coincided with merger negotiations between Paramount, the network’s parent company, with Skydance, a conglomerate now led by David Ellison, who is close to the Republican president.
Trump then denied any responsibility for Colbert’s dismissal, which he attributed to “his absolute lack of talent” and the show’s million-dollar cost to CBS, but took the opportunity to warn that the next to fall would be two other ‘late night’ kings, Kimmel (ABC) and Fallon (NBC), known for their disagreements with the president.

Despite the president’s repeated criticism of Colbert’s show’s lack of ratings, ‘The Late Show’ has held the top spot in total number of viewers for years.
According to audience measurement data from the Nielsen company, the program closed the first quarter of this year with a slight advantage over ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, on ABC, which has experienced a rise in its viewers after Trump’s continuous attacks, reported Agencia EFE.
