An Arapahoe County, Colorado jury found James Craig, 47, guilty of first-degree murder of his wife Angela for deliberately poisoning her in March 2023.
Tests concluded that Craig tampered with her protein shakes for more than ten days, adding arsenic, and subsequently administered a lethal dose of intravenous cyanide while she was hospitalized.
James Craig Case: Gradual Poisoning
According to the prosecution, Angela became ill on multiple occasions and was hospitalized three times for symptoms such as severe dizziness, vomiting and convulsions.
Craig produced every protein shake she consumed, adulterating them with toxins, and even used tetrahydrozoline – a compound found in eye drops – and cyanide in her final treatment.
His death was declared a flat encephalogram after the arrest.
It was reconstructed that Craig sought guides to manufacture undetectable poisons and purchased potassium cyanide and arsenic via the internet, tools used to plan the crime.
Trial, conviction and sentence
James Craig was also convicted of additional charges: attempted premeditated murder, tampering with evidence, perjury and conspiracy to commit murder.
Judge Shay Whitaker imposed life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a mandatory sentence under Colorado law for first-degree murder.
During the trial, Angela’s relatives made moving statements. Her eldest daughter stated in tears: “Dad was supposed to be my hero, but in my story he will always be the villain.”
The judge described Craig’s path of destruction as “as devastating as a tornado,” acknowledging the impact it left on the family.

The defense suggested that Angela may have committed suicide, citing old entries in her diary, and questioned the thoroughness of the investigation.
