Alejandro Sanz has offered one of the most sincere conversations of his career when he sat down with Jordi Évole in a television special recorded between Washington and New York.
In this meeting, the singer opened the doors of his personal and professional life, reviewing both his greatest hits and the most difficult moments that have marked his career.
Without mincing words, the artist addressed issues that for years had remained in the realm of speculation.
Alejandro Sanz and the origin of the rumors of romance with Shakira
One of the most anticipated points of the interview was, without a doubt, his relationship with Shakira. Speculation began in 2005, when both artists released the hit song “La tortura”, a collaboration that quickly became an international phenomenon. The chemistry they projected, both on and off stage, fueled rumors of a possible romance for years.
However, until now neither of the two had spoken so clearly on the subject. It was Évole who brought up this obvious connection, prompting a direct response from the singer from Madrid.
Far from dodging the question, Sanz acknowledged that there was a special connection between them. However, he clarified that this never went beyond friendship and professional matters. The reason, as he explained, was simple: both were in a sentimental relationship at the time.
The singer recalled that Shakira was at the time with Antonio de la Ruawhom he knew personally. This situation, added to his own love life, meant that any possibility of romance was ruled out from the beginning. Rather than a missed opportunity, Sanz sees it as a wise decision.
Over the years, the singer has reflected on what it meant not to cross that line. As he explained, that choice allowed his relationship with Shakira to evolve into a solid friendship, based on mutual respect and affection. For him, it is one of the most valuable bonds he has built in his life.

A friendship that has stood the test of time
Even when Évole insisted -in a more relaxed tone- on whether there was any kind of tension between them, Sanz was blunt: there is no romantic component at present. What does remain is a close complicity, full of trust and sense of humor.
In 2005, both artists were going through very different personal stages than they are today. Sanz had just come to the end of a phase following his separation from Jaydy Michelwith whom he had his daughter Manuela. Shortly after, he would start a relationship with Raquel Pererawith whom he would form a family.
On the other hand, Shakira had a stable relationship with De la Rúa, which lasted for more than a decade and had a great influence on her personal and professional life. Years later, after a mediatic breakup, she would start a new stage with Gerard Piqué. Gerard Piquéthe father of her children.
Although many imagined a love story between the two artists, the truth is that reality took a different path. Far from becoming a sentimental relationship, their bond became a lasting friendship that has survived the passage of time.
For Alejandro Sanz, that current connection – honest, close and uncomplicated – represents one of the most authentic forms of affection. A story that, although different from what many imagined, ended up being equally or even more significant.
