California prosecutors charged Britney Spears Thursday with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs following her arrest last March, an incident that prompted the artist’s voluntary admission to a rehabilitation center.

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office filed a formal complaint against the American singer for a misdemeanor, although the indictment does not specify the type of substances she would have consumed at the time of the incident, according to The New York Times.

The‘Princess of Pop‘ was arrested in early March by California authorities for alleged reckless driving under the influence of alcohol. She was released a few hours later and called to testify before a judge next Monday.

Five weeks after her arrest, the ‘Baby One More Time’ artist voluntarily entered a rehabilitation center to prioritize her personal well-being after an episode described by her team as inexcusable.

The singer’s entourage also assured that Spears was affected and sorry for what happened, especially for the impact that the situation could have on her children.

Spears, who was able to end her father’s legal guardianship in 2021, has maintained an active social media presence that has generated concern among her followers.

In October 2025, her ex-husband Kevin Federline expressed his concern for the performer in a memoir in which he felt it was “time to sound the alarm” about her behavior.

The singer had already briefly entered rehab in 2007 after several public incidents.

In January 2008, in the midst of a dispute over custody of her children, she was hospitalized twice briefly in a mental health treatment center, reported Agencia EFE.
