The screenplay of ‘Amores perros’ written by Guillermo Arriaga and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu will be turned into a TV series by Sofía Vergara’s production companies AF Films and LatinWe.

Arriaga will be the project’s creative consultant, according to Deadline magazine’s website, which states that AF Films has bought the rights to the original script, so it is not a remake of the film.

Amores Perros’, starring Gael García Bernal, Emilio Echevarría and Goya Toledo, participated in 2000 in the Critics’ Week, a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix.

It was nominated for both the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, won the British BAFTA for Best Foreign Film and was the big winner at the 2001 Ariel Awards for Mexican cinema, winning twelve awards.

The Mexican film ‘Amores Perros’ is one of Mexico’s most legendary movies.

Amores Perros’, Iñárritu’s debut film, tells the story of three people’s lives that intertwine when two young men are involved in a car accident while fleeing to a better future, a dream that the protagonists of the story share despite their class differences.

According to the producers, the adaptation will “revisit and expand on the story’s thematic underpinnings: interconnected lives, moral fracture and the raw emotional terrain of urban life, reimagined through a contemporary lens and a feature-length narrative.”

“This is one of the most important pieces of film intellectual property to come out of Latin America in the last 25 years,” noted Ariza, founder of AF Films.

That is why “returning this material to its creative source, and doing so in collaboration with Guillermo Arriaga,” allows them to honor his legacy and evolve it “into a new form that speaks to today’s global audience,” reported Agencia EFE.
