Pop star Britney Spears pleaded guilty Monday in a California court for reckless driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, following her arrest last March, an incident that prompted the artist’s voluntary admission to a rehabilitation center.

The singer’s defense attorney appeared in place of the defendant before a Ventura County judge after being charged last Thursday by the prosecution with a misdemeanor.

Ventura County Commissioner Matthew Nemerson sentenced Spears, 44, to 12 months probation and one day in jail, to be deducted from time already served.

He was also fined US$571 and must attend consultations with a psychologist once a week and with a psychiatrist twice a month.

The ‘Princess of Pop’ was arrested in early March by California authorities for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Five weeks after her arrest, the ‘Baby One More Time’ singer voluntarily entered a rehabilitation center to prioritize her personal well-being after an episode described by her team as inexcusable.

The artist’s entourage also assured that Spears was affected and sorry for what happened, especially for the impact that the situation could have on her children.

Spears, who managed to end the legal guardianship exercised by her father for years in 2021, has maintained an active presence on social networks that has generated concern among her followers.

In October 2025, her ex-husband Kevin Federline expressed his concern for the performer in a memoir in which he felt it was “time to sound the alarm” about her behavior.

The singer had already briefly entered rehab in 2007 after several public incidents.

In January 2008, in the midst of a dispute over custody of her children, she was hospitalized twice briefly in a mental health treatment center, reported Agencia EFE.
