The Liguilla in Mexican soccer always gives us stories of unexpected heroes, and on Saturday night at the Jalisco Stadium, the name of Osinachi Ebere was engraved in gold letters.

In a quarterfinal first leg match that had everything from agonizing penalties to the shameful reappearance of homophobic shouting, Cruz Azul took a giant step towards the semifinals with a 2-3 victory over an Atlas team that, despite heroic saves by Camilo Vargas, could not contain the Celeste’s power.

Playoffs: Atlas vs Cruz Azul

The first half was a real battlefield.

Constant clashes and fouls cut the rhythm of the game, leaving little room for magic.

However, just as the referee was getting ready to send everyone off for the break, the South American-African connection appeared: Ebere started the play, José Paradela put in the cross and the Argentine Carlos Rotondi scored with a left-footed shot at 45+2 to make it 0-1.

The red-and-black defense was in total disarray and “La Máquina” did not forgive them.

The second half began with Cruz Azul going on the attack.

In the 55th minute, the lead was extended thanks to a left-footed goal by Ebere, after a surgical assist by Omar Campos.

The frustration in the stands was not long in coming, and unfortunately, the homophobic shouting was once again heard in the Jalisco stadium in the face of the passivity of the refereeing corps.

Just when it looked like Atlas was knocked out, the reaction came.

In the 69th minute, Alfonso “Ponchito” González reduced the deficit, and in the 81st minute, a foul by Gonzalo Piovi gave the home team a penalty kick that captain Aldo Rocha changed into a goal to make it 2-2.

The stadium was a cauldron, but fate had a final twist in store.

In the 87th minute, a mistake by Argentine Rodrigo Schlegel led to a penalty in favor of the Azules; Ebere took the ball with enviable calm and sealed his brace for the final 2-3.

With this result, Atlas is in an impasse that seems to have no way out.

The “Zorros” are obliged to win by two goals in the second leg at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium if they want to stay alive.

For their part, Martín Anselmi’s team returns to the capital with their morale high and half a job done.

Next Saturday, May 9, we will know if “La Máquina” confirms its favoritism, or if Atlas has one last life in this vibrant Clausura 2026.
