San Diego police said Monday that the attackers were 17 and 18 years old, but did not specify which of the two is the minor.
Authorities revealed that the mother of one of the attackers, who took his own life after the assault, alerted police after noticing her son, his vehicle and three guns stored in the family home were missing.
The young man reportedly left a suicide note in which he made comments about racial superiority, according to San Diego police.
One of the weapons used had a hate message engraved on it, CNN reported Tuesday, citing sources in the investigation.
On Monday afternoon, FBI agents searched the home of one of the young men, which is located just over two miles from the Islamic Center of San Diego.
The teen was enrolled in a San Diego Unified School District virtual learning academy and was on track to graduate, according to district spokesman James Canning, quoted by the Los Angeles newspaper.
For her part, one of the faithful of the Islamic Center of San Diego assured Axios that the community feared an attack because it had already “received multiple threats”.
He also recounted that during the shooting, students at the school that houses the mosque, for children between the ages of five and nine, were barricaded by teachers and tutors inside the classrooms before being escorted out of the building by police.
The police and the community have highlighted the role of the security guard who died during the attack, who, according to the authorities, acted “heroically”, minimizing the costs of the event.
The victim has been identified by his family as Amin Abdullah.
An online fundraising campaign was created to help the families of the three victims with funeral expenses, among others.
