Four migrants died and four others were injured after a panga boat capsized in the coastal area of Imperial Beach, south of San Diego and just a few steps from the border with Tijuana. The accident, which occurred between midnight on Friday, November 14 and the early hours of Saturday, November 15, triggered an extensive search operation by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and Border Patrol (CBP).

Authorities confirmed that among the survivors there are people who claimed to be Mexican, although so far it is not clear how many of the dead or injured are of Mexican nationality. The identity of the other migrants remains under investigation while rescue work continues in the area.

Boat accident with migrants in Imperial Beach

According to the Coast Guard’s official statement, the emergency call came shortly after midnight, when Border Patrol agents from Imperial Beach reported the capsizing of a vessel frequently used for irregular maritime crossing attempts.

At the first rescue point, agents found six migrants on the beach, one of them lifeless and another trapped under the boat, who was rescued alive.

Later, search teams received a second report of people in the water near the Imperial Beach Pier.

There they located three more migrants, who were declared dead by the emergency services.

In total, the confirmed toll so far is four dead, four injured and one detained migrant, who was taken into custody by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The four injured were transported to area hospitals for medical attention.

The search continues by air and sea

Authorities are maintaining an active operation with boats, helicopters and land personnel to locate other possible migrants who may have fallen into the sea.

The Coast Guard reported that the total number of people aboard the vessel is still unknown, so it is not ruled out that there may be more survivors or victims.

Teams are focusing their search on the coastal strip between the Imperial Beach pier and the border line, an area where emergency rescues related to irregular sea crossings are frequently recorded.

Increasing risks for migrants trying to arrive by sea

The San Diego sector is one of the points where attempts to cross by sea have increased the most in recent years.

Many of these crossings are made in improvised or overloaded pangas, which do not have safety equipment, life jackets or navigation technology.

Captain Robert Tucker, commander of Sector San Diego, again warned of the extreme dangers of these voyages:

“This case demonstrates the severe risks to foreign nationals attempting to enter the United States by sea in unstable vessels.”

For the Hispanic community living in the United States, this incident adds to a series of tragedies that have occurred in maritime routes between California and Baja California.

Community organizations have reiterated that these vessels often operate under human smuggling networks that expose migrants to highly dangerous conditions, especially at night and during heavy swell seasons.

The causes of the rollover have not yet been determined.

The authorities will analyze the state of the sea at the time of the accident, the condition of the vessel and the possible involvement of human traffickers.

The Border Patrol is also interviewing survivors to establish how many people were on board and from what point the panga sailed.

The Coast Guard asked anyone seeing unusual activity in the coastal area to contact emergency numbers immediately.
