Héctor Herrera’s name is once again at the center of the conversation in Major League Soccer. The Mexican midfielder is looking to return to Houston Dynamo, the same club that decided not to renew his contract a little over a year ago after a disciplinary episode that marked his departure from the league.
In November 2024, Houston Dynamo announced that it would not continue with the then captain of the team after an incident that occurred in the MLS Playoffs against Seattle Sounders. In that match, Herrera was sent off after spitting at referee Armando Villarreal, an action that led to his immediate exit from the match and ended up costing the Texans elimination. The action took place after the Mexican player committed a foul that was punished with a yellow card. Visibly upset, Héctor Herrera spat at the referee’s legs when he turned around. The VAR alerted the referee, who reviewed the action and showed the midfielder a straight red card.
From disciplinary punishment to departure from MLS

The punishment was not limited to the field of play.
Although there were advanced talks for a renewal, Houston Dynamo management decided to put an end to his time at the club, marking a breaking point in the relationship between the two parties.
At the time, Pat Onstad, the team’s general manager, was blunt in explaining the club’s position.
He pointed out that spitting at a referee or opponent is unacceptable, acknowledging that Héctor Herrera himself understood the seriousness of what had happened and that he had lost control for a moment.
After leaving MLS, Herrera returned to Liga MX to join Toluca.
During his time with the Red Devils, the midfielder was part of the squad that won the Bicampeonato, the Campeón de Campeones and the Campeones Cup.
However, his role was mostly secondary, with few minutes on the field and without the expected prominence.
He is aiming to return to the Houston Dynamo

A new chapter for ‘HH

According to information from journalist César Luis Merlo, Héctor Herrera will return to Houston Dynamo after leaving Toluca.
The player would arrive as a free agent and at 35 years of age, in what would be one of the most eye-catching returns in recent MLS.
So far, neither the club nor the player has made an official announcement.
But the possible return opens a new chapter for Hector Herrera in the United States, where he will be looking to close his career with a second chance after an episode that marked his departure.
