U.S. First Lady Melania Trump on Monday called on ABC to take action following comments made by host Jimmy Kimmel in his latest monologue last Thursday, in which he made reference to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and which she considers “rhetoric of hate and violence.”
In a message posted on X, the first lady said that the network should “take action” against this type of content.
The host did a parody on his show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ about the dinner for journalists covering the White House, two days before the event, as if he were the comedian chosen to entertain the guests, among whom were, for the first time President Donald Trump, his wife Melania and top officials of his cabinet.
The president, first lady and officials had to be evacuated after a gunman managed to cross the security barricade of the hotel where the event was being held and started shooting towards the door where the dinner was being held.
In between jokes, Kimmel alluded to the first lady with an ironic comparison and made jokes about the president in relation to an AI-generated image he had shared on social media and later deleted after receiving criticism.
In her message, Melania Trump stated that the content of the program “is not comedy” and accused the comedian of contributing to “deepening the political divide in America.”
He also argued that figures like Kimmel “should not have access to American homes every night to spread messages of hate.”
The first lady urged ABC management to “take a stand” and questioned how much longer the network would allow the host’s behavior.
“His monologue about my family is not comedy; his words are corrosive and delve into the political sickness that reigns in America,” Melania Trump said in X.
The first lady further said that people like Kimmel “should not have the opportunity to come into our homes every night to spread hate” and called Kimmel “a coward” who “hides behind ABC because he knows the network will continue to protect him.”
“How many more times will ABC management allow Kimmel’s egregious behavior at the expense of our community?” he insisted.
Last year, ABC suspended Kimmel’s program after comments he made about Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist murdered on September 10, reported Agencia EFE.
