The wildfire known as the Mother Fire continues its advance in central California, becoming the largest in the state so far in 2025.
Since its July 2 start near Highway 166 between Santa Maria and New Cuyama, the fire has consumed approximately 79,630 acres and remains 10% contained, according to CAL FIRE reports.
Affected areas and evacuations

The Madre Fire is burning in remote areas of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Kern counties.
Including portions of Carrizo Plain National Monument, which has been closed to the public to facilitate firefighting efforts.
Authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for the following zones:
LPF-017, SLC-226, SLC-240, SLC-263, SLC-264, SLC-265, SLC-298, SLC-299, SLC-300, SLC-312, SLC-313, SLC-337, SLC-338, SLC-339 and SLC-358.
In addition, evacuation warnings have been issued for the zones:
SLC-225, SLC-239, SLC-266, SLC-301, SLC-359, SLC-365, SLC-366, SLC-367, KRN-245, KRN-249, KRN-259, and KRN-281-B.
These orders and warnings indicate an immediate or potential threat to life and property.
Residents are urged to evacuate immediately if they are in areas under evacuation order and to prepare to leave if they are in areas under warning.
Fire conditions and containment efforts

Fire behavior is extreme, driven by strong winds and dry vegetation, making containment efforts difficult.
More than 600 firefighters, supported by helicopters, air tankers and heavy machinery, are working to control the Mother Fire.
So far, no damaged structures or casualties have been reported, but the fire threatens approximately 50 structures in the region.
Impact on air quality and public health.

Dense smoke generated by the Madre Fire has moved to the south and southeast.
Affecting air quality in areas of the Central Valley and the Channel Islands.
Smoke is expected to reach light to moderate levels in metropolitan areas from Los Angeles to San Diego.
