After an intense week-long search, Montana authorities announced on August 8, 2025, that they had arrested Michael Paul Brown, 45.
The man is a suspect in the August 1 shooting at The Owl Bar in Anaconda. Four people were killed in the attack and their families are demanding justice.
Details of the Michael Brown crime

The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. Friday at the small southwest Montana bar, leaving bartender Nancy Lauretta Kelley (64) and three local patrons – Daniel Edwin Baillie (59), David Allen Leach (70) and Tony Wayne Palm (74) – dead.
Brown, a U.S. Army veteran – who served in Iraq and in the Montana National Guard – fled in minimal clothing, abandoned a white Ford F-150 pickup and then stole another vehicle with camping equipment.
The seven-day search involved more than 130 agents, supported by FBI, ATF, local agents, drones, sniffer dogs and ground teams.
The operation took place in rugged, wooded terrain west of Anaconda, near Stumptown Road.
Capture and official reactions

Brown was taken into custody near the scene of the shooting at 2 p.m. Friday inside a structure that had previously been searched by police.
A motive for the attack has not been disclosed.
Governor Greg Gianforte praised the tireless commitment of the officers, and Attorney General Austin Knudsen described Brown as a “dangerous individual” and expressed sympathy for the families of the victims.
Violence in bars

Violence in a local bar resonates especially in Hispanic communities living in small or rural areas, where everyone knows each other.
Brown had a history of mental illness, reinforcing the need for public health and prevention policies that benefit Latino communities.
The deployment and coordinated efforts among multiple agencies show the effectiveness of the system when there is interagency collaboration, something of interest to those who value public safety.
