Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold said Thursday that learning with the San Francisco 49ers boosted his level to be with his team in Super Bowl LX, which will take place Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

“Offensive scheme is even more important than what you see. I learned it in my time in San Francisco; learning about defenses was fundamental to understand how we attack them, what schemes we should use on each coverage. It was a great experience and something crucial in my growth as a player to be here,” explained the quarterback in the run-up to Super Bowl LX.

From Draft promise to proven leader

At 28 years old, Sam Darnold has spent time with five teams in the NFL.

In his first seasons with the New York Jets (2018-2020), the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2018 Draft.

And with the Carolina Panthers (2021-2022) he always ended up with more losses than wins.

By 2023, although he was Brock Purdy’s backup on the 49ers, with whom he reached Super Bowl LVIII, a loss to the Chiefs, he acknowledged that under head coach Kyle Shanahan he improved his ability to read opposing defenses.

He showed that ability in the 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings.

He led them to the playoffs with a record of 14 wins and 3 losses, despite which he was not retained for this season when he signed with the Seahawks.

Today I am very motivated

That journey, Sam Darnold said, has made him appreciate the year he had with Seattle.

He led them to finish the regular season as the best team in the National Conference.

Something that was corroborated with the victory in the title game against the Los Angeles Rams two weeks ago, which gave them a ticket to the Super Bowl.

“I don’t think this would have been possible without the obstacles I had to overcome early in my career, that lets you know where you stand.”

“Today, I am very motivated. I’m going to demand more of myself than any outside force ever could,” he stressed.

In his first appearance as a starter in the NFL championship game, Sam Darnold will attempt to earn his first championship ring.

In addition to leading the team to its second Super Bowl ever.

Earlier in the day, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald reported that linebacker Nick Emmanwori suffered a sprained ankle in practice, but was confident he would be recovered for Sunday.
