Toluca beats Santos

Own goal and goals seal the win

Mexican champion Toluca defeated Santos Laguna 3-1 on Wednesday in a comeback victory to take the lead in the second round of the Clausura tournament, along with Chivas de Guadalajara.

An own goal by Hared Ortega and goals by Marcel Ruiz and Brazilian Helinho sealed Toluca’s victory. Santos Laguna took the lead with a goal by Spaniard Francisco Villalba in the 21st minute.

In the second half, Argentine coach Antonio Mohamed’s men came out with a forward line.

Toluca soon tipped the scales with an own goal by Hared Ortega in the 50th minute, and Ruiz extended the lead three minutes later.

Santos fell into disarray, was outplayed and in the 60th minute was dealt another blow with Helinho’s penalty goal.

Toluca has accumulated 6 points from 2 wins in the same number of outings, the same balance as Guadalajara, which has a lower goal-scoring record.

Guadalajara, with Argentine Gabriel Milito on the bench, won 1-0 against Juarez with a goal by Yael Padilla in the last play of the game.

The surprise of the day was a 2-0 win for San Luis, coached by Spanish trainer Guillermo Abascal, over América, who played 70 minutes with a man down.

Another unexpected result on the second day of the tournament was Pumas’ 1-0 win over Tigres with a goal by Uruguayan Robert Morales.

On Wednesday, Cruz Azul scored its first win with a 2-0 victory over Atlas.

Uruguay’s Gabriel Fernández and Argentina’s José Paradela scored.

Tijuana beat Querétaro 1-2 with goals from Spaniard Unaí Bilbao and Kevin Castañeda.

The second day began on Tuesday.

Venezuelan Salomón Rondón gave Pachuca a 2-1 win over León.

Colombian Égar Guerra scored Puebla’s 2-1 goal against Mazatlán and Monterrey beat Necaxa 2-0 with goals from Argentine Germán Berterame and Mexican Iker Fimbres.
