Gobble and Waddle are the pair of turkeys that U.S. President Donald Trump will pardon this Tuesday at the White House, fulfilling the tradition of saving two birds from ending up in the oven for Thanksgiving dinner.
The National Turkey Federation presented the birds Monday at the luxurious Willard Hotel, steps from the White House, where they will spend the night in an elegant suite before receiving a presidential pardon.
Gobble and Waddle were born in July on a North Carolina farm and weigh 52 and 50 pounds, respectively. As tradition dictates, one will become the national Thanksgiving turkey next Thursday and the other will be the alternate, although both will be pardoned on Tuesday.

“Presidential turkeys symbolize gratitude, hard work and the connection of the farm and American families,” said Leslee Oden, the president of the National Turkey Federation, to several families with children invited to the presentation.
Trump’s reprieve for turkeys
After receiving Trump’s pardon, in one of the White House’s most colorful ceremonies, both turkeys will return to their home state, where they will spend the rest of their lives under the care of North Carolina State University.
The names were chosen through a social media poll prompted by First Lady Melania Trump, which also included options for Acorn and Squash, Sugar and Spice, and Pumpkin and Pie.

The White House’s relationship with Thanksgiving turkeys, the most deeply rooted family tradition in American culture, has several decades of history, but it was George H.W. Bush (1989-1993) who decided to pardon a turkey given to him by the Federation in 1989.
“I assure you and this magnificent turkey that it will not end up on anyone’s table, not even this man’s,” he declared.
The pardoning of the turkeys marks the official start of the holiday season in Washington, reported Agencia EFE.
