Toluca, coached by Argentine Antonio Mohamed, reaffirmed its dominance in Mexican soccer with a 1-3 victory over Club América in the Campeón de Campeones trophy match held at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
The win not only gave the Diablos their fifth Campeón de Campeones title, but also deepened the Eagles’ results crisis in key competitions.
Electrifying start and strong response

The match started with high intensity.
In the very first minute, Alejandro Zendejas opened the scoring for América with a precise shot, after an assist from Uruguayan Brian Rodríguez.
The thousands of Azulcremas fans in attendance at the Californian stadium, where a large part of the crowd was of Hispanic origin, were fired up.
Toluca, however, was quick to react.
In the 12th minute, Argentine Franco Romero equalized the score with a powerful shot from half distance, thanks to an assist from midfielder Marcel Ruiz.
Ruiz played a key role in the team’s recovery after the initial blow.
Opportunities in both arcs

Both teams offered a vibrant first half with some dangerous chances.
For the Águilas, goalkeeper Luis Malagón stopped a clear shot by Alexis Vega, and defender Sebastián Cáceres saved a goal by deflecting a dangerous play by Jesús Gallardo.
On the other side, Jesús Angulo saved Toluca by clearing a ball that had already beaten the goalkeeper, after an attempt by Isaías Violante.
When it looked like they would go into the halftime break with a draw, Toluca scored the second goal at minute 45+5.
It was an accurate header by Uruguayan Bruno Méndez, off a pass from Alexis Vega from a corner kick.
Toluca is ruling and dominance

In the second half, the pace of the game slowed, with both teams fighting for control of the midfield.
It was then that the Portuguese Paulinho, from a free kick, took advantage of a rebound and scored with his left foot to make it 1-3 for Toluca.
América, without many offensive ideas in the second half, suffered even more when Chilean Igor Lichnovsky was sent off in the 89th minute for a hard tackle, ending a night to forget.
América, in crisis

The defeat exposed the delicate situation of América, which so far this year has been eliminated from three important tournaments:
by Cruz Azul in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup,
by Toluca in the final of the Clausura 2025,
and by Los Angeles FC in the playoffs for the Club World Cup.
Mexico’s winningest club now faces increasing pressure from both its fans and management.
While Antonio Mohamed and Toluca reinforce their role as the new powerhouse of Mexican soccer.
The victory not only gave the Diablos their fifth Champion of Champions title, but also deepened the América results crisis
