Ya no hay películas con presupuestos medianos.

U.S. actor Alec Baldwin lamented Monday that Hollywood has lost “the middle ground” with the disappearance of mid-budget film creations, a type of production that, in his opinion, allowed more time to be devoted to creative development during filming.

“When I was younger you had films of 5 million, 50 million and 150 million. Now the ones in the middle have disappeared,” he said in a meeting with the media in Granada (southern Spain), where he is currently shooting ‘El sastre del rey’, the first feature film by Spanish actor Pedro Casablanc.

The American actor – who was charged with involuntary manslaughter following the death on a shoot of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when the revolver she was holding went off and was later acquitted at trial – considered that this lack of budget hinders the creative processes because money means only one thing: time.

In that vein, he added that films with tighter budgets force them to work fast and reduce the margin for actors, directors and screenwriters to delve deeper, discover themselves and find nuances during the shoot. “You want time to think. When everyone comes together, the actors, the director, the whole crew…that’s when the real process begins,” he commented.

‘The King’s Tailor’ tells the story of a boy in the 1960s who accompanies his father, who has been commissioned to make clothes for the King of Morocco. Baldwin acknowledged that he liked the film from the first moment he read the script.

“I like the story. It’s very sweet, very innocent and different. I liked that it was different, because many films nowadays are hard. And this film is beautiful,” he said before celebrating that he likes Spain “especially” because the people “are not loud” or “scandalous” like in the U.S.

Asked if, as a “great comedy actor” he thinks that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, needs to “change tailor”, the actor replied that no, that “he is perfect as he is”: “He is perfect now. Maybe he needs the tailor of a king? No, there is no king in America”.

For his part, Casablanc said that the fact of having an international actor in the filming is a sign that Spanish cinema reaches heights “that everyone knows” and that, for this reason, as soon as a project comes to them, they accept it.

“I think Balwin is very happy. He’s playing a very nice, mysterious character that I think he’s really enjoying. Plus, he’s been very easy to work with,” he said.

The film, shot entirely between Granada and Tangiers, also stars Natalia de Molina, Jesús Carroza and Alberto Ammann, reported Agencia EFE.
