Actor James Franco has joined the cast of the film “John Rambo,” the prequel to the saga that would star Silvester Stallone, reports Variety.

The actor, who is currently at the Cannes Film Festival, has a small role in the film, alongside Noah Centineo as Rambo and David Harbour, who will play Major Trautman, his commanding officer.

Directed by Jalmari Helander (“Sisu”), “John Rambo” tells the story of the origins of the franchise and is set before “First Blood” (1982), the Stallone film that started the popular saga.

The shooting of “John Rambo” has already finished in Thailand. Also starring in the film are Yao (“Sinners”), Jason Tobin (“A Thousand Blows”), Quincy Isaiah (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Jefferson White (“Yellowstone”) and Tayme Thapthimthong (“The White Lotus”).

News of Franco’s addition to the film comes just as the actor has been spotted at Cannes, at the opening ceremony with his partner Izabel Pakzad, according to Variety.

Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani wrote the screenplay for “John Rambo,” produced by Lionsgate, Millennium Media, Templeton Media and AGBO, and distributed by Lionsgate, reported Agencia EFE.
