Chicago residents confronted U.S. federal agents Tuesday after an alleged chase that led to a clash in an East Side neighborhood bordering Indiana amid escalating tensions with the Trump Administration’s immigration policy.

Dozens of residents rallied with shouts of “ICE, go home!” in reference to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, following an alleged crash resulting from federal agents’ pursuit of a man, local media outlets ABC 7 and WGN 9 reported after speaking with residents.

Clash on Chicago’s East Side sparks confrontation

Federal authorities, who have stepped up their presence on Trump’s orders, sprayed tear gas to disperse the crowd, CBS reported, near the intersection of 105th Street and Avenue N, where there were residents with flags from Latin American countries protesting immigration raids.

Illinois State Senator Robert Peters called ICE’s behavior “unacceptable” when he shared a video of the scene, in which he also warned that East Siders “will not tolerate this kind of nonsense.”

“All eyes on the East Side right now! ICE cannot just come into our communities and cause chaos like this. My team is on the ground and will update residents as the situation evolves,” he said in X.

At this time there is no official report on the number of detainees or the purpose of the chase.

More than 1,500 arrested

The development reflects tensions in Chicago since the Sept. 6 start of the ICE-led Operation Midway Blitz as part of Trump’s crackdown on mass migrant deportations, which has resulted in the arrest of more than 1,500 people, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Monday.

Trump has ordered the National Guard mobilized in Chicago, but an appeals court on Saturday, Oct. 11, upheld the ban on the deployment, although it allowed the troops to remain under federal control and the troops, sent from Texas, to remain in Illinois while the initial lawsuit is resolved on the merits.
