Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield stole the spotlight with their performances in week five of the NFL season.

Prescott delivered an effective performance in the Cowboys’ 37-22 win over the Jets in a game in which he connected on 18 of 29 passes for 237 yards and four touchdown catches.

It is the 13th time Dak has passed for four touchdowns.

A Lone Star team record over such legends as Tony Romo, who had 10; Danny White, eight; Don Mereditk, six; Troy Aikman, four; and Roger Staubach and Craig Morton, with two, each.

The performances through week five of the NFL’s highest paid player at $60 million per year have him on pace to have the best season in his 10-year career.

Dak, 32, has accumulated 1,356 yards per carry and 10 touchdowns, numbers that have helped the Cowboys become the best offense in the NFL despite being without their starting linemen.

Another bright spot in week five of the NFL season was Drake Maye, who led the Patriots to a 23-20 win over the undefeated Buffalo Bills.

Maye, 23, came to the Pats selected in the third round of the first round of the 2024 Draft, a year in which he was a disaster under Jerod Mayo, with whom he had three wins and nine losses.

For this season, Patriots owner Robert Kraft paved the way for better development of his young passer with the hiring of head coach Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the same man who helped Tom Brady win six Super Bowls with the team.

In the game against the Bills, despite not passing for a touchdown, Maye had solid numbers with 22 of 30 completions and 273 yards against one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl in the NFL’s American Conference.

The junior is fifth among passers with 1,261 yards and seven touchdowns.

Despite his youth, Drake Maye has been intercepted only twice, a record low despite the fragility of his line of protection that has allowed him to be caught 17 times, the second-highest mark in the league.

Leads Bucs with all-time record

Baker Mayfield, leader of the Bucs’ offense, also deserves special mention after his performance in the dramatic 38-35 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

He completed 29 of 33 completions for 379 yards and two touchdowns.

He is the first quarterback in the NFL to total more than 375 yards per carry and have fewer than 5 incomplete passes in a regular season game.

Mayfield has had a long run of teams in his eight years in the NFL, which he came to drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the No. 1 spot in the first round of the 2018 Draft.

The Browns cut him after four years, despite the potential he exhibited in 2020 when he led them to the playoffs.

In 2021 he played six games with Carolina Panthers, the same year he spent four games with Los Angeles Rams.

He came to the Bucs in 2023 and immediately led them to the postseason, something he repeated last year and is on track to replicate this season with his 1,283 yards per pass and 10 touchdowns that have him fourth among quarterbacks.
