Dallas kicks off Week 17 with a win over Commanders

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Commanders 23-30 on Thursday in a Christmas Day game that opened Week 17, the penultimate week of the NFL season.

The Cowboys are in second place in the National Football Conference (NFC) East with seven wins, eight losses and one tie, where the Commanders are third with a 4-12 record; both teams are already eliminated. Dak Prescott stood out in the Dallas Cowboys’ offense with 307 yards and two touchdown passes; he was caught on six occasions.

Dallas imposes conditions from the start

The Lone Star team, which snapped a three-game losing streak, dominated the first half.

In the opening period, they took the lead thanks to a delivery to the diagonals that was caught by Jake Ferguson.

Washington pulled within 3-7 on a Jake Moody field goal.

Dallas Cowboys extended their lead in the second quarter with a Javonte Williams touchdown run and pass to KaVontae Turpin on an 86-yard play that culminated in a touchdown.

The Commanders responded via a Jacory Croskey-Merritt carry, but the Cowboys pulled back within 10-24 on a field goal by Brandon Aubrey before halftime.

In the third quarter Washington pulled closer 20-27 on a 72-yard run by Jacory Croskey-Merritt, and a field goal by Moody.

The visitors added via a 52-yard three-point kick by Aubrey.

Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders closed the game with an exchange of field goals that left the score 23-30.

Later, the Minnesota Vikings hosted the Detroit Lions and the Denver Broncos, the best team in the American Conference (AFC), visited the Kansas City Chiefs.

The activity will continue on Saturday with two duels.

The Los Angeles Chargers will face the Houston Texans and the Green Bay Packers will take on the Baltimore Ravens.

Among the 10 games scheduled for Sunday are the Cleveland Browns’ game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are looking to clinch the top spot in the AFC North.

The Indianapolis Colts, with 44-year-old veteran Philip Rivers at the controls, will also face the Jacksonville Jaguars, who must win to stay first in the American South.

Week 17 will conclude on Monday with the Los Angeles Rams visiting the Atlanta Falcons.
