Mexico’s Miguel Herrera acknowledged on Thursday that the failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup as Costa Rica’s coach affected him, but said he will make up for it as Atlante’s coach starting with the 2026 Apertura.

“The failure with Costa Rica hurt me a lot. It’s the biggest one I’ve ever had, but you learn that you’re not the best in the world when you win a title, nor the worst when you do badly. If you want to be a successful guy you have to pick yourself up and this is the moment and what better than to do it with Atlante, the team I love,” said the coach.

Miguel Herrera spoke at his presentation as Atlante’s new coach.

Team that will play in the first division of Mexican soccer starting in the Apertura 2026.

In which there is no promotion or relegation, thanks to the purchase of the Mazatlán franchise, a team that disappeared at the end of the Clausura 2026.

“Of course we are going to be competitive again, but we have to be aware that we bought a franchise, we did not achieve promotion in a sporting manner.”

“Which although deserved was not achieved, but all resources were used for this project,” he noted.

Herrera, who coached the Mexican national team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was twice league champion with América, was grateful to return to the bench of the team that gave him his first opportunity as a coach in 2002.

“Atlante gave me the first opportunity to be a coach and today they give me this confidence.”

“That’s why I’m going to prove that I can take it back to winning ways and be competitive,” he stressed.

Miguel Herrera admitted that it will not be easy for Atlante to compete against the league’s most powerful teams.

But with patience and work in good recruiting and basic forces, he said they will succeed.

“There is a budget to which we have to adapt. We have a project that we are putting together from the basic forces.”

“We want a good seedbed that we will complete with experienced people,” he said.

About playing at the Azteca Stadium, the helmsman was excited.
