The 2025 Club World Cup, held in the United States, closed its edition with a scandal. The MetLife Stadium in New Jersey witnessed not only Chelsea’s resounding 3-0 victory over PSG, but also an unexpected incident involving Spanish coach Luis Enrique.

During the tournament, PSG had shown defensive solidity, conceding only one goal in six matches. However, in the final, they were outplayed by the English team. In less than 45 minutes, Chelsea had already put the game to bed with two goals from Cole Palmer (’22 and ’30) and one from Joao Pedro (’43).

After the final whistle, an argument broke out between players from both teams.

In the midst of this verbal exchange, Luis Enrique approached Joao Pedro and touched his face with his hand, in what was perceived as a mild aggression.

The Brazilian fell to the ground exaggerating the reaction, but video replays confirmed the contact between the neck and chin.

Although it was not a violent blow, Luis Enrique’s attitude was harshly criticized in social networks and sports media.

One of his own players quickly pulled him away to prevent the situation from escalating.

The incident occurred when several PSG players, frustrated by the defeat, exchanged gestures and words with Chelsea players.

The footage shows defender Achraf Hakimi making a provocative gesture towards Andrey Santos, prompting Joao Pedro and Gianluigi Donnarumma to intervene.

While Joao Pedro tried to calm the situation, Luis Enrique got involved and ended up committing the gesture that has generated international controversy.

So far, it has not been officially announced what type of sanction the Spanish coach may face for his conduct.

The 2025 Club World Cup served as preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

These types of incidents have called into question the post-match disciplinary protocols.

For the U.S. Hispanic community, which follows with interest the growth of soccer in the country, these episodes show how the high level of competition can degenerate into unsportsmanlike acts that must be firmly sanctioned.
