The match between Inter Miami and Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle, which was to be held this Friday in Puerto Rico, was postponed to February 26 due to an injury to Argentine star Lionel Messi.

Messi himself explained in an Instagram story, posted by Inter Miami, that in the last match in Ecuador he ended up “with a discomfort”. “Together with the people of the organization, the club decided to suspend this match (…) Thank you for the love because I know that they were all sold out,” said the soccer player addressing his fans in Puerto Rico.

Messi did not participate in Wednesday’s training session due to a muscle strain in his left hamstring.

It happened during the match against Barcelona SC in Ecuador and his return to training will depend on his recovery in the coming days.

For its part, VRDG Entertainment Group, in charge of producing the Puerto Rico event, said it is “unfortunate news” that is “out of everyone’s control”.

“All parties agreed that the event should happen, but with the participation of Leo Messi, who is the main figure.”

Therefore, it was agreed to postpone the game, the VRDG Group said in written statements.

Inter Miami was scheduled to travel to the island on Thursday for a training session open to the public at Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón, where the match was also to be held.

This preseason tour of Inter Miami has been presented in countries such as Peru, Colombia and Ecuador, but none of them had a practice open to the public.
