‘Michael,’ the biopic centered on the figure of Michael Jackson, stormed to the top spot at the worldwide box office, grossing $217 million globally in its first weekend of release, according to data from the Box Office Mojo website.
Of this amount, 97 million was raised in the United States and Canada and the remainder (120 million) in other markets.
The premiere has exceeded expectations despite poor reviews – 38 percent on the Rotten Tomatoes website, which averages media reviews. The public, on the other hand, gives it a good score.
According to CinemaScore data, which collects exit surveys, the rating rises to ‘A-‘, with the best rating being A+ and the worst F-.
According to PostTrak, 61% of ticket buyers are female and 66% were 25 years of age or older.
It is the best debut ever for a biopic, beating the record set by 2015’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’ ($60 million) and 2018’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with $51 million, according to Variety data.
Michael’ chronicles the singer’s beginnings with the Jackson 5 to become one of the most important artists on the planet. Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, plays the King of Pop in his acting debut.

Specialized critics have complained that the film offers a sugarcoated view of Jackson’s life, as it does not include the allegations of child sexual abuse.
With these figures, the King of Pop snatches the top spot from the Super Mario movie, which has remained the box office leader since its April 1 release. Michael’ achieves the second best debut of the year.
The videogame-inspired film, which has taken the box office by storm since April 1, drops to second place, and accumulates $831 million worldwide – $386 million in North America and $444 million in the rest of the world.
In third place is Project Hail Mary (‘Project Salvation’), which grossed 13.2 million in North America this weekend and 613 million worldwide.
Fourth place goes to the horror film ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ (‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’), with $5.6 million grossed this weekend in the U.S. and Canada, and totaling $65 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, ‘The Drama’, the film starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, remains in fifth place and surpasses the hundred million dollar mark worldwide (101.8) after adding 2.8 million dollars this weekend in the United States and Canada, reported Agencia EFE.
