American director Paul Thomas Anderson was crowned this Saturday with the highest award given by the Directors Guild of Hollywood (DGA), for his film ‘One Battle After Another’.

The filmmaker prevailed in a category that also included Mexico’s Guillermo del Toro (‘Frankenstein’); Chloé Zhao (‘Hamnet’); Ryan Coogler (‘Sinners’); and Josh Safdie (‘Marty Supreme’).

Anderson’s film, starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Benicio del Toro, follows the story of a former revolutionary who is forced to confront his past after the disappearance of his daughter.

These awards are usually a strong indicator in the Oscar race, whose winners will be announced on March 15.

Throughout the history of these awards, only eight winners in this category have failed to convert their win into a Best Director Oscar, and only two films that won the Best Picture Oscar had not previously won the DGA award – will the same happen to One Battle After Another?

The Best First Film category was won by Charlie Polinger for his film ‘The Plague’, beating Hasan Hadi (‘The President’s Cake’); Harry Lighton, (‘Pillion’); Alex Russell, (‘Lurker’), and Eva Victor (‘Sorry, Baby’).

While the documentary film director award went to Mstyslav Chernov for ‘2000 meters to Andriivka’, the film that follows a Ukrainian battalion as it struggles to reach and recapture a Russian-controlled village.

As for the television awards, the series ‘The Pitt’ won the award for best drama series for director Amanda Marsalis’ work on the episode ‘6:00 PM’; and in comedy, actor Seth Rogen and Canadian director Evan Goldberg won the award for their episode ‘The Oner’ of ‘The Studio’.

The award in the miniseries category went to Shannon Murphy, director of ‘Dying for Sex’, reported Agencia EFE.
