The Republican Party in Texas has spoken, and the message is loud and clear: loyalty to Donald Trump is the only bargaining chip that matters.

In a historic and tension-filled day, incumbent Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton handed veteran Senator John Cornyn a humiliating defeat, snatching the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate with a resounding 62% of the vote.

This was not just any election; it was the most expensive primary in U.S. history, with more than $25 million spent on advertising.

While Cornyn represented the old guard of the party, Paxton presented himself as the tireless warrior of the MAGA movement.

Trump’s endorsement was the deciding factor.

Despite criticism from other Republican senators in Washington, the president bet everything on Paxton, sending a clear signal.

In the new Republican Party, questioning Trump’s leadership is the quickest path to political exile, as seen recently in Georgia, Alabama and Kentucky.

A candidate surrounded by fire

Paxton’s victory is, for many, a challenge to traditional political logic.

His career has been plagued by scandals that would have sunk any other candidate:

Impeachment in 2023: Faced 20 counts of bribery, breach of trust and obstruction of justice.

Personal controversies: His image was tarnished by a public divorce resulting from an infidelity that shook the foundations of Texas politics.

Despite being acquitted by the state Senate, these “smears” will be the main weapon of the opposition in the months to come.

Will Texas be painted blue? The James Talarico Factor

In November, Paxton will face James Talarico, a state legislator and seminarian who has become the Democrats’ great white hope.

Although Texas has not elected a Democrat to statewide office in 32 years, the party’s gamble is that Talarico’ s “moral” profile will contrast with Paxton’s controversial record, appealing to independent voters tired of media chaos.

Control of Congress is at stake, and Texas will undoubtedly be the most explosive battleground of these midterm elections.

Is Paxton an invincible candidate or the Republicans’ “Achilles heel” in the face of a moderate electorate, do you think Paxton’s record will weigh on him in the general election against Talarico?
