Game of Thrones’ star Sophie Turner will play Lara Croft, the main character of the Tomb Raider video game franchise that will jump for the first time to the small screen in series form, Amazon MGM Studios announced Wednesday.

The film and television production and distribution company set January 19 as the start date for this production, in which Sophie Turner will play one of the most famous fictional characters: an intelligent and athletic English archaeologist who ventures into ancient tombs and dangerous ruins around the world.

This video game character has previously been played by American star Angelina Jolie on the big screen in 2001’s ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’; and the 2003 sequel, ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life’.

In addition, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander played the protagonist in the 2018 film ‘Tomb Raider: The Adventures of Lara Croft’.

“I’m thrilled to be playing Lara Croft. She’s an iconic character, who means so much to so many people, and I’m giving it everything I’ve got. These are huge shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Angelina (Jolie) and Alicia (Vikander) with their stunning performances,” Sophie Turner said in a statement accessed by The Hollywood Reporter.

The 29-year-old British actress returned to the small screen last October with the drama ‘Joan’, in which she played Joan Hannington, who in the 1980s earned the nickname ‘The Godmother’ of diamond theft.

Turner also has the release of ‘The Dreadful’, a film with gothic overtones, directed by Iranian-American filmmaker Natasha Kermani (‘Imitation Girl’) and set in the mid-15th century British conflict known as the War of the Two Roses, in which she shares credits with Kit Harington, her ‘Game of Thrones’ co-star.
