Tension between the White House and Mexico has escalated to levels not seen in decades. This Thursday, a Department of State (DOS) source confirmed to CBS News that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered a thorough review of the 53 Mexican consulates operating in U.S. territory.
The instruction is clear: align foreign diplomatic presence with President Donald Trump’s new national security priorities.

This measure does not come out of the blue.
The revision is a direct response to a series of head-on clashes between the two nations.
Attorney General Todd Blanche recently issued a warning that shook Mexican politics: Washington is demanding the urgent arrest of ten high-ranking Sinaloa state officials.
This includes Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, for allegedly collaborating with drug traffickers.
Adding to the tinderbox is last month’s dark incident where two US officials (presumably from the CIA) lost their lives on Mexican soil while reportedly operating without the knowledge of Claudia Sheinbaum’s government.
Mutual distrust is now the driving force of foreign policy.
Millions of Mexicans in uncertainty

Mexico has the most extensive consular network in the United States.
These offices are not just buildings; they are the legal lung for nearly 40 million people of Mexican origin residing in the country.
From passports to legal advice on deportation, the closure of these offices would leave millions in a state of absolute vulnerability.
According to the source cited by CBS News, Rubio is seriously considering ordering the closure of strategic offices if he deems their operation does not add to Washington’s interests or if Mexico’s cooperation on extraditions continues to stall.

The audit will evaluate everything from resource management to the type of assistance provided by these offices.
For many analysts, this is more than an administrative review; it is a political pressure tool to force Sheinbaum’s government to act against the Sinaloa Cartel leadership.
What about you Onnda, do you think closing consulates is a fair measure to put pressure on the narco or is it an unfair punishment for hard-working immigrants?
