Mexico’s coach, Javier Aguirre, reiterated on Wednesday his confidence that his country will have a great World Cup and confessed that the atmosphere of togetherness reminds him of 40 years ago, when Mexico reached the quarterfinals at home.

“We are all in the same boat; there is a great desire to make history and that reminds me of 40 years ago. Never in 40 years have I seen so much enthusiasm in the people, in the streets,” said ‘Vasco’ in a brief press conference.

The atmosphere around the selection process has become polluted in the last few hours.

This is due to the fact that defender Jesús Gallardo and forward Alexis Vega received permits to play tonight’s CONCACAF Cup semifinal with Toluca.

This caused anger in other managers who cannot use their selected players in the quarterfinals of the Clausura tournament.

Even Guadalajara’s president, Amaury Vergara, called on his national team players to return to the team, with which they trained this morning.

The rebellion caused the Federation to reverse the permits to Gallardo and Vega.

And he issued an ultimatum with the threat that any player who does not show up at the training camp today at 20:00 local time (02:00 GMT) will be out of the World Cup.

“I want to show my face; I am here to explain that we have a unique project and that it goes according to plan, with everyone’s support,” he said.

Aguirre reiterated that playing at home will be an unforgettable experience for the national team.

“We went to Qatar and South Africa, but here at home the World Cup will be unforgettable,” said the coach (Filed as: Javier Aguirre asks for unity in the World Cup).

Mexico reached the quarterfinals the two previous times it hosted the World Cup, in 1970 and 1986, a difficult challenge now, which ‘Vasco’ is not giving up on.

Mexico will play in World Cup Group A against South Africa, South Korea and Czech Republic.

Before that, they will play three friendlies against Ghana on May 22, Australia on May 30 and Serbia on June 4.

Last week, Javier Aguirre called up 12 players, already assured for the World Cup, who will join eight young players who will help in training.

This is pending the arrival of the rest of the selected players, yet to be announced, from the leagues abroad where they play.

Today the called-up players will have dinner together on the first day of concentration and tomorrow they will begin to work (Filed as: Javier Aguirre asks for unity in the World Cup).
