The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues to expand and surprise. Now it’s official: the X-Men will be back in the movie Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released on May 1, 2026. This film will not only reunite the Avengers, but will bring back iconic characters from the mutant franchise, in what promises to be one of the biggest celebrations of Marvel’s legacy.
Ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, fans have been eagerly awaiting the integration of mutants into the MCU. That wait appears to be over. Marvel Studios has confirmed, via a live stream with over 9.6 million views, the return of several actors who played the X-Men in the Fox saga.
Who is returning?

So far, Marvel has confirmed the return of the following actors in their classic roles:
Kelsey Grammer as Bestia (Hank McCoy)
Patrick Stewart as Professor X (Charles Xavier)
Ian McKellen as Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr)
Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler
Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
James Marsden as Cyclops (Scott Summers)
Channing Tatum as Gambit (featured in Deadpool & Wolverine, 2024)

This franchise crossover represents not only a nostalgia-laden return, but also a direct connection between the MCU multiverse and the mutant universe that began in 2000 with X-Men.
What to expect?

Avengers: Doomsday will be directed by Shawn Levy and will mark a before and after for Marvel.
The central villain will be Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr, in an alternate version that has already been confirmed as part of the multiverse.
Fans expect to see unprecedented interactions between mutants and Avengers, and there is speculation that this film will serve as a bridge to new sagas with the X-Men as protagonists.
This return also leaves the door open for future appearances of characters like Wolverine or Jean Grey in the main MCU.
