Anchor Jorge Ramos considers it “very complicated” to do journalism in Spanish in the U.S. in Donald Trump’s second presidency, but says it is necessary to speak “accurately” about the “cruelty” suffered by migrants, which he has achieved in his first year as an independent communicator.

“It is very complicated, but I believe it is our responsibility to accurately report the cruelty with which many immigrants are being treated here, and that is precisely one of the reasons I decided not to retire,” Ramos said in an interview with EFE about the experience of being a Latino journalist.

The independent production company founded by the Mexican communicator, Tres Alebrijes, received two nominations for the News and Documentary Emmy 2026: the one in the category ‘Best Spanish-language news program’ for its broadcast ‘Jorge Ramos: Así veo las cosas’, while he was nominated for ‘Best Spanish-language journalist’.

Ramos said he “could have left television, the media and journalism” after having led the newscasts of Univision, the largest Spanish-language channel in the United States, for almost 40 years, but he felt it was “very important to have the responsibility to report exactly what is happening.

He even attributed part of the success of his show, which reached more than 101 million views in March on his YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok channels, to the fact that “people know they’re going to find out exactly how President Donald Trump and his administration are treating immigrants.”

“We must tell the truth about what is happening, we must tell the truth about the cruelty and mistreatment that immigrants are receiving, and we must continue to give a voice to others who have no voice, and that is part of my responsibility as a journalist,” said the journalist, who also holds U.S. citizenship.

Ramos went from being the most visible face of television journalism in the United States to launching, in June 2025, his digital program ‘Así veo las cosas’, which registered 4.85 million unique users last March.

The communicator, who now describes himself as “a youtuber, a podcaster and a tiktoker,” noted that there is a “migration of credibility,” in which the public is shifting its trust from traditional media to journalists with their own digital channels.

“The main difference is absolute editorial freedom. We are responsible and I am responsible for each of the words that I pronounce and put on the air. On the one hand, on the other hand, I can react much more quickly to any news that is happening and I don’t have to wait for a newscast,” he said.

Although he believes that these new formats have overtaken traditional media, he acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly “being able to monetize it”, i.e., that “this becomes a sustainable business model”, especially for emerging journalists.

He also expressed that artificial intelligence (AI) does not “scare” him, as it serves as a tool to attract audiences and for research, but it must be “used responsibly”.

The power of the U.S. Hispanic audience
Nearly two out of three U.S. Latinos, 65%, prefer to get their news from digital media, ahead of other ethnic groups, such as whites (55%) and African Americans (50%), according to a Pew Research Center report cited by Ramos.

For this reason, the journalist considered that the views of his program show the power of Hispanic audiences in the United States, where the gross domestic product (GDP) of Latinos amounts to 4.1 trillion dollars, according to a report by the Latino Donor Collaborative.

“We can compete absolutely with any network, with any corporation, on the one hand. On the other hand, there is a very clear change in the way we are listening to the news,” he observed, reported Agencia EFE.
