The UEFA Champions League 2025/26 will mark a historic change in European soccer: for the first time it will be played in a new “League Phase” format, leaving behind the traditional group system.

The new edition will feature 36 clubs from 19 countries competing on a single league table, with the aim of offering more balanced and exciting matches from the first matchday. The decision is part of UEFA ‘s strategy to increase the competitiveness and commercial appeal of the tournament.

Each team will play eight games against different opponents (four home and four away).

Once played, a single table will be drawn up:
1st to 8th place: advance directly to the round of 16
9th to 24th place: will play a play-off to qualify for the round of 16
25th to 36th place: they will be eliminated from the tournament.

This system seeks to pit big clubs against each other from the first few rounds and offer a more attractive schedule for fans and television networks.
