Former Prince Andrew, brother of King Charles III, was arrested Thursday in the United Kingdom on suspicion of misconduct in public office in a case linked to his relationship with the late U.S. financier Jeffrey Epstein. Hours later, he was released under investigation, Thames Valley Police confirmed.
The arrest occurred at 08:00 GMT at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where he currently resides. Authorities also conducted searches at properties located in Norfolk and Berkshire, including areas related to his former residence in Windsor.
Why was ex-prince Andrew arrested?

The investigation centers on allegations that former Prince Andrew, who was the UK’s trade envoy between 2001 and 2011, allegedly shared confidential material with Jeffrey Epstein.
Documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice in January include communications that apparently show that Andres sent Epstein information related to official visits.
To countries such as Vietnam, Singapore and China, as well as potential investment opportunities in Afghanistan.
Under British law, commercial envoys are subject to strict duties of confidentiality regarding sensitive information obtained on official business.
Police clarified that former Prince Andrew was not arrested on allegations of sexual offenses, but solely on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Release and legal status

At around 18:50 GMT, former Prince Andrew was seen leaving Aylsham police station after being arrested.
Subsequently, police confirmed that he was “released under investigation,” meaning that the process continues while additional evidence is being analyzed.
Under British regulations, a person may be held for up to 24 hours before being charged or released, unless an authorized extension is granted.
Thames Valley Police said the case is “active” and urged caution to avoid interfering with the judicial process.
Reaction of King Charles III

In an official statement, King Charles III expressed his “deep concern” over the situation, but emphasized that “the law must take its course.”
He indicated that the process must be “complete, fair and adequate”, and that the authorities are counting on institutional cooperation.
Neither Buckingham Palace nor the monarch were notified in advance of the arrest.

Previous context and international relevance

Former Prince Andrew had already faced controversy over his relationship with Epstein and a civil suit filed in the United States by Virginia Giuffre.
The case was resolved through an out-of-court settlement without admission of guilt.
In recent years, he lost official functions, military titles and, in October 2025, was formally stripped of his princely title.
Since the Epstein case had a broad impact in the United States, the new investigation generates international interest, especially for those following global news from the U.S.
For now, the process remains under investigation and no formal charges have been filed.
